To say the least, 2020 and (continuing into) 2021, have signified a major shift in the way we work.
Our regular routines of waking-up, getting dressed, grabbing coffee at our favourite local (or big chain) shop, and commuting to a designated office space have been disrupted.
Some of us have created home offices in our spare rooms, on kitchen tables, couches, and even closets. This adjustment has not been easy for many, and the additional stress of at-home distractions, childcare, and switching to remote work has been a challenge to say the least.
As someone who has been working remotely for the last 3 years, I would like to share some tips, and products that might help you feel a little more sane in your home office space!

The Set Up
A Desk, Table, or Designated Space
It’s important (if you have the room) to try and create a space that is just for work. This will help you turn-on and turn-off at the beginning and end of the work day.
There are some very affordable desks out there if you know where to look! Facebook Marketplace is a perfect place to start if you are looking for something used, antique, and reasonably priced.
Structube is a great place to look for modern (compact) desks to fit your style and space.
Looking for a luxury tech desk? This one is super cool! It converts to a standing desk, charges your phone, laptop and other devices, has a timer, drawer storage, comes in two colours, and is height adjustable.
Laptop Stand & Phone Stand
If you are doing video meetings, you should invest in a laptop stand. This not only will save your neck and back from sitting all day – but it will also lift your computer camera to a higher angle- making it much more flattering and professional. Check out Amazon, Staples, Facebook marketplace, for different options.
A phone stand comes in handy for personal use (like Zooming or Facetiming with your family) and also making sure you don’t miss a notification (or your phone!) when working from home.
Background and Lighting
Proper lighting not only affects how you feel in a space, but it can also increase your energy and productivity. Too much light can be harsh on the eyes, too little can cause low energy and fatigue. If you are not in a space with natural light available, make sure you are getting enough light into the space.
No windows? Check out this light – it’s naturally proven to help combat seasonal depression (we all know how long Canadian winters can feel) and will give great light to any dark space. Pro tip: Make sure you are placing it out of your direct line of sight!
If you are on video often for work, proper lighting and the background of your space can improve your Zoom experience. If you can add some interest to the space behind you, go for it! Lots of people add their favourite books, plants, fun wall paper or posters, accomplishments, or logos.
If you are working in a space that doesn’t allow for any great backgrounds, there is an option on most video communication software’s to upload a photo. Some people have a little too much fun with this – but there are tasteful ways to make your background look more professional, without being too cheesy! If you use Zoom, here’s the how-to.
The Fun Extras
From fun stationary, to greenery and coffee – adding little things that make you happy can have a big impact.
If you have a logo, you'll be surprised how good it feels to see your branding on physical goods! Order a custom notebook, mug, pen, or shirt with your logo / branding. Vista Print has tons of options, and comes straight to your door.
Feeling screen fatigue on your eyes? Blue light glasses might be a great addition to your space!
